Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) is of French origin. She is best known for her sculpture of a monumental spider, “Maman”, outside the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Her work is characterized by exploring the uncomfortable things in life: trauma, memory, sex, insecurity, the female body, etc.

Bourgeois mainly made sculpture, but the work we present “Femme Maison” was worked on the plane of the canvas. It belongs to a series of paintings with the same title, which portray how the artist felt the woman was in her role relegated to domestic life: a woman exposed from the bottom, trying to hide herself, and at the same time she is trapped in that little house, where she doesn’t go, where her world begins and ends. A reality that can resonate with us even today.
