Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian painter. Love, intimacy, sensuality and sexuality were frequent themes in his works. His symbolist style rejected the naturalistic styles of the moment, and used symbolic elements that emphasized the freedom of art. His creations were severely criticized, as they were labeled lewd.
Because of this opposition to the artistic canon of the time, he and other artists created the Vienna Secession. A union of artists who rejected official academic art, due to the fact that its rules seemed oppressive and classist.
Despite the scandals, Klimt gained recognition for his innovative work. Especially during his “golden” period, when the artist used gold abundantly in his works. His creations were received with enthusiasm. “The kiss” is part of this period, one of his most recognized works.
