A Japanese animation studio, founded in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. The first two had worked in the direction of the “Heidi” series.
The name of the study derives from the word that the Italians used for their planes exploring the Sahara during the Second World War. It is also the Italian word used to name the hot wind that blows in this desert. The intention behind the choice of this name was the idea of ”blowing a new wind in the anime industry”.
The studio has produced films such as “Princess Mononoke”, “Chihiro’s Journey” or “The Moving Castle”.
